What is a Rotary Club? Surprisingly few people can
answer that question. It is part of a world-wide
organisation of people of all nationalities and
creeds, strictly non-political and non racial and
numbering well over a 1.2 million persons, who make
no secret of their membership and are happy to wear
the Rotary badge, the Wheel, a small unobtrusive
emblem. This identifies people who have undertaken
to serve the community locally and internationally.
The motto of Rotary is "Service Above Self”.
Watford Rotary Club was founded in 1924 and is one
of four Clubs in the Watford area. We are open to
ladies but at this time consist of about 31 men who
are working or retired and represent varying trades,
professions or vocations in the locality. We are
seeking new members to ensure the continuity of our
Club. We are very proud of our collective
achievements over the past thirty years and are
anxious that these continue.
A basic part of Rotary activity is the provision of
educational opportunities not usually available in
the normal course of schooling. To this end we have
organised competitions and sponsored young adults on
educational and community projects overseas and have
hosted overseas study groups visiting this country.
In the international field we have established
contact with the Rotary Clubs of Chinon(Loire Valley
France), Hoffheim-Main-Taunus Germany and Tonneins
in the south of France. During the past thirty years
regular exchange visits have taken place and many
close friendships have been established.
Many of these activities require financial support
for which the Club raises funds in various ways.
These frequently involve the organisation of social
functions involving partners and friends, providing
in a practical and useful way the fellowship of
Rotary.
Every Rotarian is warmly welcomed at any of the
25,000 Rotary Clubs throughout the world and when
away from home particularly overseas it is common
practice to make a point of visiting the local club.
